Somnath - a pilgrimage site known for Somnath temple, which has one of the most popular yiotir linga ('radiant phallus') of the God Somanath (God Sivá). The temple was so famous for its splendor and its wealth that it attracted the famous King Mahmud of Ghazni (around the year 1024 ), who, under the pretext of destroying its idols, took its treasures, along with its renowned golden gates.
Skirted by the Arabian Sea, the temple commands a spectacular view of the Saurashtra peninsula. Boasting an imposing architecture of the Chalukyan style, the Somnath Temple with its striking shikhara (spire) is 50 m tall. Silver doors, intricate carvings, a shivling and a Nandi idol (bull god) add to the splendour of the building.
